Apple is officially releasing their anticipated first AR headset to the consumer market in Feb 1, 2024. After there Apple Event back in November, there has been whole a lot of buzz recently on whether that Vision Pro does actually live up to what Apple claims it to be. There many competitors to Apple such as Meta who solely shifted their focus from Social Media to focusing on VR headsets which are surprisingly affordable coming only at $499 for the 256 GB version. This brings the question why would anyone buy the Vision Pro for $3499?
Apple jumping into the AR/VR market which is relatively new with only one competition which is Meta. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are both immersive technologies that alter our perception of the real world, but they achieve this in different ways.
Augmented Reality (AR)
Definition: AR enhances the real-world environment by overlaying digital information or virtual elements onto it.
User Interaction: Users experience AR through devices like smartphones, tablets, smart glasses, or AR headsets.
Integration with Reality: AR allows users to interact with both the physical and virtual worlds simultaneously. Digital information is superimposed onto the real-world environment, enhancing the user's perception.
Examples: Pokémon GO is a popular AR application where virtual Pokémon are superimposed onto the real-world surroundings using a smartphone's camera.
Virtual Reality (VR):
Definition: VR creates a completely simulated, computer-generated environment that users can immerse themselves in.
User Interaction: Users typically engage with VR using dedicated headsets that cover their field of view entirely, isolating them from the real world.
Isolation from Reality: VR provides a fully immersive experience, isolating users from their physical surroundings and transporting them to a computer-generated environment.
Examples: VR is used in gaming, training simulations, and virtual tours. VR headsets like Oculus Rift or HTC Vive offer users a rich and immersive experience in a virtual world.
The Apple Vision Pro is well thought through with build quality to the brain of the system. It being powered by the revolutionary Apple Silicon which are in the new line up of Apple Macs. This chip is specifically designed to practically do all computer tasks on the headset. The downside I see with this is the materials. The material is made out of metal and not just any metal but Aluminum and Titanium which is pretty heavy and might not comfortable to wear for long periods. They believe this is the next revolution after the introduction to the iPhone which brought them billions. As more AR models come out, the price of them will fall which is the time to buy one. Other wise, the Apple Vision Pro does live up to engineering and tech marvel as it is but as a consumer product it lacks the main component which is the PRICE.
More will added once the actual headset comes out.
